Electricity can jump
Electricity from a power source can jump across a distance to find an earth. The higher the voltage the further electricity can jump. You do not need to touch equipment to be in danger just being close to substations, poles and pylons can put you at risk. Sometimes it can jump up to a metre!
Theme
Electricity is useful but very dangerous. Respect it and keep away.
Aim
- Understand the importance of being careful around electricity
- Understand the risks of playing near Substations, Power lines or any other supplier of high voltage electricity
- Warn others about the dangers of electricity
Suggested Activities
- Play the 'Power Savers' game on the PowerWise website.
- Get children to line up and do standing jumps (you may want to put cushions in front of the jump zone). Measure each jump, emphasise how far a metre actually is.
